More information
Aspiring athletes from West Cheshire College will be taking part in the ‘Dame Kelly Holmes Rotunda Challenge’ set by the Olympian during her visit to the College last year.
Kelly, a double Olympic champion, presented the College’s Annual Awards and set the challenge for students to beat her GB record of running 1000 metres in 2:32.55, as they race round the College’s rotunda.
The Challenge will take place on 16th April at the College’s Ellesmere Port Campus, off Sutton Way, from 4-5pm and members of the public are invited to come and show their support.
Suzie Hobson, from West Cheshire College, said: “We’re all delighted that Kelly Holmes set us the Challenge and our sports students have been training hard.
“Originally the plan was to run both up and down the rotunda which is nearly 1000m, however, we’ve adapted the Challenge slightly – so now students are running 500m up the rotunda to beat half of Kelly’s time which is 1:16.27.”
The challenge is part of the College’s year-long celebrations to mark the 2012 Olympics, which aims to get more people active and to encourage them to have fun and enjoy doing sports. The events include visits from Olympians including Ben Challenger and taster sessions in a variety of sports including handball, volleyball, table tennis and fencing.
